Anu Malik was born to the famous music director and composer Sardar Malik. He learnt music from Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma also known as ‘Babaji’. Some would be surprised to know that Anu Malik has made his debut in the year 1981 and lend a big hand in composing music for many movie albums to make them a success but never got noticed. He was indulged in various important projects such as ‘Sohni Mahiwal’, ‘Ganga Jamuna Sarswati’, ‘Mard’, ‘Maa’ and ‘Jaal’.
The year 1993 was a turning point in the singing career of Anu Malik. He composed and voiced for many super hit movies during this year namely Baazigar, Sir, Jaanam, Phir teri kahani yaad aayi etc. Anu Malik was honoured by his first film fare award for Baazigar in the subsequent year. His success was further heightened with the tremendous popularity, he gained when his compositions were gratified and loved by all the listeners and he was started getting differentiated from many other struggling artists.
Anu Malik established a firm recognition as a singer and composer in the year 2001 when his work was praised in the movies Aks, Fiza, Mujhe Kuch Kehna hai and Filhaal. After this, Anu never stepped back from trying anything new or innovative. His sincere and fearless attempt is also one of the factors that dominated his growing graph of success. He never went with the leading and existing trends of music industry and has always given chance to the fresh and upcoming voices. Anu Malik also used many voices from the south that he thought would be fit for delivering his compositions.
Anu Malik has also been accused of plagiarizing the lyrics and music of other composers in the name of inspiration. However, he has paid proper credit to the composers but there were several numbers which he never accepted were copied and released them by his own name.
Anu Malik has been judging the singing talent hunt show ‘Indian Idol’ from last four consecutive years. Presently, he is sharing his chair with Javed Akhtar, Sonali Bendre and Kailash Kher. Anu Malik has voiced for many Bollywood numbers as well as private albums. Some of his hits in non film albums are Dekho Barish ho rahi hai, Dhuan Dhuan and Tera chehra. During his singing career, Anu Malik has also received best music director award at the national level which is a great achievement.
