In the year 1930, Geeta Dutt was born to a rich Zamindar’s family. In the year 1942, she moved to Bombay with her parents in an apartment in Dadar. When she was twelve, Hanuman Prasad spotted her high singing potential and accepted her to be his student. He trained her and polished her singing talent.
Geeta Dutt received her first Bollywood break to playback for the track ‘Do Bhai’ that brought her to the notice of many leading composers and music directors. Initially many of the projects that she took up included many devotional and tragic compositions. But when she was proposed to lend her voice to the peppy composition of S.D Burman, a different view of her singing appeared in front of the audiences. Her sensual and soothing singing style made her first choice of every music director to sing seductive songs. She used to sing party numbers and was very comfortable to sing on the western beats.
Geeta Dutt worked with many leading personalities of the music industry with whom many other striving singers dreamt of working with. She sung many tracks numbers composed by Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan, Hansraj Behl, Chitragupt and Husnlal Bhagatram. She also performed in many stage shows and acted in a Bengali movie.
Geeta Dutt was married to one the famous actors of that era, Guru Dutt. She met him during her recordings for the movie Baazi. They had three children. Guru Dutt got involved in an extra marital affair with Waheeda Rehman that caused break up of their marriage and she got addicted to alcohol.
At that time, she received a grand offer by S.D Burman to sing for his upcoming movie. He preferred her over Lata Mangeshkar and Asha bhosle who were the leading voices of that time. Geeta Dutt made an effort but failed to cope up with Burman’s expectations due to her personal problems.
In the year 1964, Guru Dutt died because of taking excessive overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills. In the year 1972, she passed away cirrhosis of the liver.
Geeta Dutt is remembered or singing ‘ Waqt ne kiya’, ‘Tadbir se bigdi hui’, ‘Babauji dheere chalna’, ‘Mera namm chin chin chu’ and ‘Chale aao chale aao’.
