Bappi Lahiri was born in a Bengali family. Since he was the only child, his parents had high hopes for him and they always dreamt of making him a renowned singer both at national as well as international level. His mother was a well trained singer and musician and had also gained training of the Shyama Sangeet. Fortunately, this helped Bappi Lahiri to gain links and enjoy an easy entry in the music industry. Bappi Lahiri started playing tabla at the tender age of three. But, it was only after the age of 19 that Bappi Lahiri made an entry to the Bollywood playback industry. Initially, to begin his career, he composed music for Nanha Shikari. The defining moment of his career came in the year 1973 when he composed as well as sung for the movie Zakhmee. Bappi Lahiri became a star overnight only when he made a different and remarkable attempt to introduce the Disco form of songs to the Indian audience. This type of music was presented in such a form in front of Indian audience that they not only whole heartedly accepted but enjoyed and demanded this form of music. This brought him success and made his dream come true to be a popular singer all over the world. Bappi Lahiri’s compositions are mostly delivered in the voices of Kishore Kumar and Asha bhosle. Later he introduced Alisha Chenoy and Usha Uthup as the playback voices for his compositions. In 1990’s, he made a sudden exit from Bollywood Music Industry and made a come back with his music compositions ‘Dalal’ by Prakash Mehra. The list of fine works of Bappi Lahiri includes Koi yahan nache nache, Hari Om Hari (Dushman) , Jimmy Jimmy ( Disco Dancer), Han mere jaisi haseena (Armaan) and ‘Jee le’ (Tarzan). Talking about his present works, he voiced for the composition of Vishal-Shekhar in the movie ‘Taxi number 9211’. He had also been a judge at the singing reality show titled as ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, L’ll champs’ telecasted on Zee T.V along with Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet. He has also judged a show named ‘K for Kishore’ the main motive of which was to search a voice like ‘Kishore’. Coming to the personal front, Bappi Lahiri is married to Chitrani and is father of two children. His son’s name is Bappa and daughter ‘Rema’.
